EVOLUTION
OF THE LAYOUT
After the exchange fair of February 2009, where the layout stood at a
height of 150 cm, I reduced the height to 125cm. The
legs
were shortened and the track is now 125 cm above the floor.
At
this height, one gets a better overview of the whole layout without
having a birds'eye perspective..
Backdrop :
As backdrop, a simple retaining wall is build. It consists of concrete
and brick parts. 10mm plywood forms the basis. Onto
this ,
pieces of styrofoam are glued with white glue, to represent the pillars
and beams. then an overall film of white glue is applied. With a sieve,
grey joint filler is poured out over the whole surface. The
glue
film should not be too thick, otherwise the angles are not sharp enough
a make an unrealistic look. When the filler is set,
excess
of filler is scraped off. A
second or third application of filler may be necessary.
The grey concrete wall is made of plaster molds and the brick wall is
made of architect cardboard (foam layer with thin cardboard on both
sides, ons side is peeled off) . The structure of the brick wall is
then carved into the foam. Afterwards everything is painted untill the
desired result is achieved. Weathering can be done by using powder
pigments and diluted paints.
